At Off Duty Fireman Construction Inc., we know that any remodel can be a daunting task. A kitchen remodel is often especially intimidating because it involves so many decisions, and many of those decisions concern the space’s essential functions and not merely personal taste in decor. We have many years of experience guiding homeowners through the kitchen remodeling process from start to finish, and we recommend asking the following questions before you embark on your kitchen remodel endeavors:

  • What is your goal for the space? Before kitchen remodeling, it’s important to ask yourself what your goal for the space is. Do you need additional space to work, or could you get the function you need within the existing dimensions of your kitchen? You should answer this question early in the remodel process because it serves as a guide for subsequent decisions, including whether you need to add on to your house or take out walls between rooms.
  • What is the current layout of your kitchen? Before you start a kitchen remodel, you should familiarize yourself with the layout of your kitchen, particularly the locations of your major systems such as plumbing, gas, electric, and heating. Rerouting these systems is expensive, so building your remodel design around their existing locations is a great way to save money. However, if your current layout is illogical or impairs your cooking workflow, it can be worth the investment to move these features around.
  • What appliances do you need/want? Appliance selection can be one of the most fun parts of a kitchen remodel, but can also be one of the most challenging. It’s fun to dream about all the fancy new technology you can add to your kitchen, but ultimately you need to decide what you really need and what you can really afford. A stainless steel wine cooler feels luxurious, but does it fit your actual lifestyle? Once you’ve decided which appliances you need to replace or add, choose the specific models before any cabinetry goes in–it’s much easier to adjust the dimensions of the cabinets than to find appliances that fit in existing gaps.
