Marvin Spruill
Founder & Owner — Off Duty Fireman Construction Inc.
Marvin Spruill is an exceptional individual who has made a significant impact in his community through his commitment to service and entrepreneurship. Born and raised in Hampstead, North Carolina, Marvin was inspired by his grandfather's legacy of service and hard work from a young age. He spent his formative years learning valuable life lessons working alongside his grandfather in the family business and volunteering with the local fire department.
Marvin's desire to serve his country led him to join the US Army at the age of 17, where he pursued a career in aviation. During his time in the military, he was commended for his service and dedication to helping troubled inner-city youth through various military programs. However, Marvin realized that he missed the fire service and decided to pursue a full-time career as a firefighter.
Marvin's fire service career has spanned 25 years and is currently a member of Skyland Fire & Rescue. He has been a member and instructor in several disciplines throughout his fire service career — including North Carolina's Urban Search and Rescue team, teaching vehicle extrication through the college system, and earning his degree in business management. The fire department taught him teamwork, leadership, and community involvement.
As a firefighter, Marvin ran his own side business in construction. He became frustrated with the industry's lack of core values and decided to start his own construction company — Off Duty Fireman Construction Inc., in 2000. He wanted a company that represented the core values and code he lived by: communication, accountability, honor, duty, attention to detail, loyalty, and a second-to-none work ethic.
Off Duty Fireman Construction earned its Commercial & Residential Building license in 2004 and has continued to grow and diversify. The company stays on the cutting edge of technology to give clients a second-to-none experience. Marvin is proud to be a member of the Smokey Mountain Home Builders Association, Asheville Home Builders Association, and the National Association of Home Builders.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Marvin is passionate about giving back. He works with Wounded Warriors, the UNC Chapel Hill Jaycee Burn Center for Children, and the 9/11 Memorial — and has implemented an in-house giving-back initiative at Off Duty Fireman Construction. In his free time, Marvin enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling, and golfing. He has two adult children pursuing college degrees in criminal justice and business.
